Rural video competition 2022
Rural video competition
Submissions for the 2022 rural video competition open Monday 4 April and close midnight Sunday 29 May.
About the competition
Help inspire the next generation of doctors to become rural GPs in NSW. Tell them (and the world) about the benefits of a career in rural general practice in NSW in a 1-3 minute video.
The video could be a short story, a documentary, interview/s, an original poem or music, even an animation or series of photographs. It can be funny, serious or educational. It might feature one or several NSW town/s (just make sure they are rural, defined as MMM3-7).

7 tips for making videos using a smartphone
- Don’t shoot vertical video – make sure you hold the smartphone horizontally.
- Use a tripod – if your smartphone has built-in optical image stabilization that will go some way to reducing shake, but if you want your video to look professional use a tripod. If you don’t have a tripod, try and either use your body to stabilise the camera or rest your elbows somewhere stable.
- Capture the detail – don’t use the digital zoom unless you have a dual-lens smartphone. Unlike an optical lens if you’re using a digital zoom you’re just enlarging the picture digitally so the image quality will suffer significantly. Moving closer to your subject is the best solution.
- Light your video – make sure you have adequate lighting. Don’t rely on the flash on your smartphone as it isn’t comparable to external light sources.
- Use the exposure lock to avoid the smartphone adjusting and refocusing as you shoot your video.
- If you’re conducting an interview, or your video requires clear audio, make sure your microphone is as close to your subject as possible. Other options include using an external microphone or recording audio on a second smartphone. A simple clap will allow you to synchronise the video and audio.
- Editing – it’s very hard to shoot video in a single take. Make sure you get a variety of shots – wide and close-up, different angles etc. There are many smartphone apps to edit video on your phone (e.g. iMovie, Vizmato or Cyberlink PowerDirector), but you don’t have to edit your video on your smartphone, you can export the video and edit it on your desktop computer, there are numerous video editing applications available (e.g. Animotica and Movie Maker 10).
