On the banks of the beautiful Hastings River and surrounded by national parks and state forests, Wauchope is known for its past as a logging town.

Wauchope is approximately 370 km (4 hr drive) north from Sydney. It is 21 km (25 min drive) to the regional centre of Port Macquarie.

Wauchope is a thriving rural town, the surrounding farm lands support a dairy and cattle industry. The popular heritage theme park, Timbertown pays homage to a past built on logging.

How to get there

The closest airport to Wauchope is Port Macquarie Airport (25 min drive from Wauchope). Qantas and Virgin Australia operate daily services to Sydney. Virgin Australia also operates direct services to Brisbane and Qantas operates seasonal summer services (October - May) from Port Macquarie to Lord Howe Island.

The XPT train service between Sydney and Brisbane stops at Wauchope daily. A coach connection is provided for passengers travelling to Port Macquarie.


Wauchope is home to nearly 7000 people, the median age of residents is 43 years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make up 8% of the population.

Healthcare facilities

Wauchope District Memorial Hospital provides a 24-hour, level 3 service. It has 18 inpatient beds in the main hospital comprised of eight rehabilitation and ten general medical beds. In addition Wauchope provides specialist palliative care services in a purpose built eight-bed palliative care unit.  There is one operating theatre for day-only surgery, including endoscopy, orthopaedic, gynaecology, vascular and urology and the community can access 'walk-in' medical attention from the purpose built Urgent Care Centre, seven days per week. Medical services are provided by GPs and specialist surgeons and anaesthetists contracted to the Mid North Coast Local Health District.

Port Macquarie Base Hospital (less than 20 min drive from Wauchope) is a major referral hospital for the Hastings-Macleay Network. With 195 beds, it provides the majority of specialist medical and surgical services for the network. The hospital includes specialist wards/units for general medicine, surgery, day surgery, planned and emergency theatre service, coronary care, intensive care, obstetrics, paediatrics, 24 hour emergency department, oncology, palliative care, rehabilitation, stroke, acute renal dialysis, high dependency and mental health and an extensive range of outpatient clinics.

There is an Ambulance Service of NSW station in Wauchope.

There are five schools in and around Wauchope: Wauchope Public School (K-6), St Joseph's Primary School (K-6) Beechwood Public School (K-6)Huntingdon Public School (K-6) and Wauchope High School (7-12). Nearby Port Macquarie offers an array of schooling opportunities with public and private primary and secondary schools. There is also North Coast TAFE - Port Macquarie Campus and Charles Sturt University - Port Macquarie Campus.

In Wauchope there are IGA and Coles supermarkets, Hastings Co-op department stores, Mitre 10 and Home Timber and Hardware. There is also a range of specialty and boutique stores, cafes and restaurants. Only 20 min drive from Wauchope, Port Macquarie is well placed for shopping with supermarkets including Woolworths, Coles, Aldi, Spar and IGA. Major retailers such as Target, Kmart, Officeworks and Big W are all located in Port Macquarie. There is also a range of local and national specialty and boutique stores, and services.

In Wauchope there are places of worship for a range of Christian denominations including Anglican, Baptist, Uniting, Catholic and Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. There is a Buddhist Centre located nearby in Port Macquarie.

Having moved on from its beginnings as a town based on its timber industry, Wauchope has become a thriving, rural township. It is also a gateway to national parks in the UNESCO Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area. Wauchope is now 'A Motorcycle Friendly Town' welcoming riders that make the 'must-do' trek between Wauchope and Walcha. Local events range from the Timbertown Steam Fair to the Grape Stomping Championships, produce markets, farm gate tours and a music festival, events are listed in the Visit Wauchope event calendar.
