Portland and Wallerawang are small towns in the western foothills of the Blue Mountains surrounded by beautiful undulating countryside.

Portland is 163 km (2 hr 30 min drive) from Sydney, Wallerawang is slightly closer to Sydney at 152 km (2 hr 20 min drive). The regional centre of Bathurst is 50 km (40 min drive) away. The larger town of Lithgow is 25 km (25 min drive) from Portland and 15 km (15 min drive) from Wallerawang.

Given their location between Lithgow and the Blue Mountains, and the Central West centres of Mudgee, Bathurst and Oberon, the towns are considered the gateway to the Central West region.

How to get there

The nearest airport is Bathurst Regional Airport, which is about a 40 min drive from Portland and Wallerawang. Daily flights to Sydney are available. Sydney International Airport is a 2.5 hr drive away.

The closest railway station is the Lithgow Railway Station, 25 mins away. There is a daily service that operates between Sydney and Dubbo. The train line to Sydney Airport can be accessed via Sydney Central Railway Station.



Portland is home to more than 2400 people, the median age of residents is 47 years. Wallerawang is home to slightly more than 2,000 people, the median age of residents is 39 years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make up 7% of the population of both towns.

Portland and Wallerawang both have strong industrial histories, with local power stations and man-made dams part of the landscape. The towns are also surrounded by the natural environment with areas well known for outdoor recreation and popular with 4WD and dirt bike enthusiasts. There are many local events from art exhibitions to sailing on Lake Wallace to races at the nearby Cullen Bullen Speedway.
