Nambucca Heads is a coastal town at the mouth of the Nambucca River, popular as a holiday destination. The smaller nearby town of Valla Beach is well known for its beautiful beaches and resident dolphins.

Location

Nambucca Heads and Valla Beach are approximately 490 km (5.5 hr drive) north east of Sydney. The nearest larger centre is Coffs Harbour 47 km (35 min drive) to the north.  Nambucca Heads and Valla Beach are 10 km (10 min drive) from each other.

Both Nambucca Heads and Valla Beach are known for beautiful beaches and water-based recreational opportunities including, surfing, para sailing, sail boarding, fishing and beach walking.

How to get there

The closest airport is Coffs Harbour Airport, which is a 35 min drive from Nambucca Heads. The airport is serviced by Fly Corporate (flights to Brisbane), Tiger Air (flights to Melbourne and Sydney), Qantas (flights to Sydney) and Virgin Australia (flights to Sydney).

Coffs Harbour is serviced by NSW TrainLink with northbound trains to Brisbane and southbound trains to Sydney daily.

 

Population

Nambucca Heads is home to more than 6,300 people, the median age of residents is 56 years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make up nearly 10% of the population. The smaller town of Valla Beach is home to more than 1,300 people, the median age of residents is 53 years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make up nearly 5% of the population.

Healthcare facilities

The nearest hospital is Macksville District Hospital, located 15 min drive south of Nambucca Heads. It is a 61 bed, level 3, rural hospital. The hospital provides 24-hour inpatient and emergency department services, low complexity low risk birthing and low level day only surgical services provided by specialist surgeons and anaesthetists. Medical services are provided by general practitioners.

Coffs Harbour Health Campus, a 30 min drive from Nambucca Heads, is the major referral hospital for the Coffs Network of the Mid North Coast Local Health District. It is a 292 bed facility and provides a broad range of services including day surgery, planned and emergency theatre service, coronary care (including coronary angiography unit), intensive care, obstetrics, paediatrics, 24-hour emergency department, oncology, palliative care, rehabilitation, stroke, acute renal dialysis, high dependency and mental health and an extensive range of outpatient clinics. A range of allied health services are also available on the campus.

There is an Ambulance Service of NSW station in Nambucca Heads.

The beaches and river make Nambucca Heads a great place for water-based activities and the foreshore boardwalks, with interpretive signage, make it easy to get around and learn about the town's history. Away from the water Gordon Park offers rainforest and nature walks. The Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club, is popular with golfers and non-golfers given its island setting,  ocean views and abundant birdlife. The cultural side of town is on display at the Stringer Gallery , the V-Wall Outdoor Gallery, where people are encouraged to contribute their own painting, The River mosaic sculpture may be Australia’s longest sculpture, and the painted poles where local artists have painted electricity power poles in a ‘Where the River Meets the Sea’ theme.
