Macksville is a small riverside town on the beautiful Nambucca River, apart from fishing and oyster-farming, the surrounding areas are known for bananas and other tropical fruits, vegetables, grazing, dairying and timber.

Macksville is 470 km (5 hr drive) north east of Sydney. It is 56 km (45 mins drive) from Coffs Harbour in the north and 100 km (70 min drive) south to Port Macquarie.

As a former river port, Macksville is rich in history. The adjacent Nambucca River today provides many recreational opportunities, as do the nearby national parks and ocean beaches.

How to get there

Coffs Harbour Airport is 45 min drive from Macksville. The airport is serviced by Fly Corporate (flights to Brisbane), Tiger Air (flights to Melbourne and Sydney), Qantas (flights to Sydney) and Virgin Australia (flights to Sydney).

Coffs Harbour is serviced by NSW TrainLink with northbound and southbound trains daily. Macksville railway station is located on the North Coast line providing a connection to Sydney and Brisbane.


Macksville is home to almost 3000 people, the median age of residents is 49 years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make up  more than 8% of the population.

Healthcare facilities

Macksville District Hospital is a 61 bed, level 3, rural hospital. The hospital provides 24-hour inpatient and emergency department services, low complexity low risk birthing and low level day only surgical services provided by specialist surgeons and anaesthetists. Medical services are provided by general practitioners.

Coffs Harbour Health Campus, a 40 min drive from Macksville, is the major referral hospital for the Coffs Network of the Mid North Coast Local Health District. It is a 292 bed facility and provides a broad range of services including day surgery, planned and emergency theatre service, coronary care (including coronary angiography unit), intensive care, obstetrics, paediatrics, 24-hour emergency department, oncology, palliative care, rehabilitation, stroke, acute renal dialysis, high dependency and mental health and an extensive range of outpatient clinics. A range of allied health services are also available on the campus.

There is an Ambulance Service of NSW station in Macksville.

Macksville and surrounds offers much to do including water sports on the Nambucca River, visiting Gaagal Wanggaan and Yarriabini national parks, Mount Yarrahapinni and Taylors Arm. To the west in Taylors Arm is the Pub with No Beer, made famous by country music singer Slim Dusty's hit song.
