In the heart of the Lachlan Valley, Forbes is one of the richest areas for primary production in NSW.

Location

Forbes is in the Central West of NSW located on the Newell Highway between Parkes and West Wyalong. It is about 375 km from Sydney and 157 km (just less than 2 hr drive) from Dubbo.

Forbes has a gold rush past, with stories of bushrangers part of its folklore. It is now a centre for farming with wheat and other crops grown in surrounding areas.

How to get there

Daily flights to and from Sydney are available from Parkes Airport with Regional Express(REX), a half hour drive from Forbes.

Country Link has services from Sydney to Lithgow and Orange with a connecting coach to Forbes.

Population

The town of Forbes has a population of just over 8400 people. The median age of residents is 42 years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make up 12% of the population.

Healthcare facilities

Forbes District Hospital is a small hospital with an emergency department. With less than 50 beds it provides obstetric, surgical, renal dialysis, and medical services, as well as medical imaging, pathology and pharmaceutical services.

The Community Health Centre provides a range of community-based nursing and allied health services including a palliative care service.

There is an Ambulance Service of NSW station in Forbes.

Attractions in Forbes include the Forbes Art Gallery, Forbes and District Historical Museum, Forbes Art and Craft Centre, and Heritage Trail. The outdoors can be enjoyed at Lake Forbes, Gum Swamp, Lake Cowal and national parks in the Forbes area. The Forbes Camel Races are held annually on Good Friday.
