Coolah is a small country town, located in a picturesque rural valley in the Warrumbungle region.
Coolah is 400 km (4 hr 45 min drive) north west of Sydney and 130 km (1 hr 40 min drive) from Dubbo.
The town traces its colonial heritage to the ‘black stump’ just outside Coolah. The colloquial saying ‘beyond the black stump’ was a reference to being deep in the outback or beyond the limits of colonial settlement.
The nearest airport is Mudgee Airport (1 hr 15 min drive south). There are daily flights to Sydney with FlyPelican.
Dubbo Regional Airport (1 hr 40 min drive south west) is serviced by four airlines with flights to Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Newcastle, Cobar, Broken Hill and Canberra.
The nearest railway station is Dubbo Railway Station, it is the terminus for a daily NSW TrainLink XPT service from Sydney.
A NSW Trainlink coach provides services between Coolah and Lithgow.
Coolah Multi Purpose Service is a public hospital with an emergency department. The hospital has two emergency beds, four sub-acute beds and ten nursing home beds. Current upgrades to the service are focusing on residential aged care beds and include the relocation of 10 off-site beds. The Visiting Medical Officer supports the hospital.
