Coolah is a small country town, located in a picturesque rural valley in the Warrumbungle region.

Location

Coolah is 400 km (4 hr 45 min drive) north west of Sydney and 130 km (90 min drive) from Dubbo.

The town traces its colonial heritage to the ‘black stump’ just outside Coolah. The colloquial saying ‘beyond the black stump’ was a reference to being deep in the outback or beyond the limits of colonial settlement.

How to get there

The nearest airport is Mudgee Airport (1 hr 15 min drive south). There are daily flights to Sydney with FlyPelican.

Dubbo Regional Airport (1 hr 40 min drive south west) is serviced by four airlines with flights to Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Newcastle, Cobar, Broken Hill and Canberra.

The nearest railway station is Dubbo Railway Station, it is the terminus for a daily NSW TrainLink XPT service from Sydney.

A NSW Trainlink coach provides services between Coolah and Lithgow.

Population

The population of Coolah is about 1300 people. The median age of residents is 46 years. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make up 5% of the population.

Healthcare facilities

Coolah Multi Purpose Service is a public hospital with an emergency department. The hospital has two emergency beds, four sub-acute beds and ten nursing home beds. Current upgrades to the service are focusing on residential aged care beds and include the relocation of 10 off-site beds. The Visiting Medical Officer supports the hospital.

There is an Ambulance Service of NSW station in Coolah.

The main street of Coolah is home to shops including a bakery, butcher, pharmacy and IGA supermarket. More extensive shopping options are available in Mudgee including Coles, Woolworths and Aldi supermarkets and retail chains such as Target, Big W and Harvey Norman. The major regional centre of Dubbo has extensive shopping opportunities including department stores, supermarkets and specialty stores.

Located on the banks of the Coolaburragundy River, Coolah is a great base for enjoying nature-based activities including Coolah Tops National Park ideal for walking, mountain bike riding and camping. Coolah's classic country pubs offer food and entertainment.

Coolah has a range of sporting clubs and teams including the Coolah Golf Club, an 18-hole picturesque sand greens course, that hosts a Holden Scramble event. The town also hosts the annual Coolah Veteran's Touch Footy Carnival. Lawn bowls can be played at the Coolah Sporting Club.
