Pitt Town GP recognised for training next generation

Dr Sarah Beasley of Advance Medical Centre – Pitt Town has been recognised for her outstanding contribution to training the next generation of GPs, by being named GP Synergy Supervisor of the Year for the Nepean, Western and Northern Sydney training region.

The relatively new GP supervisor has been supervising for the last three years and coincidentally did the last year of her own training in the Pitt Town practice

“I love sharing my experiences and knowledge with registrars,” Dr Beasley said.

“Being a fairly young supervisor, I can relate to the training process, and how they might be feeling during their training, I feel that I can really be a mentor as well as a supervisor.

“I can also learn from the registrars as medicine is constantly evolving and I can definitely say that I have learnt a thing or two.”

Dr Beasley is also hopeful that like herself, when finished their training GP registrars might become part of the team.

“I felt incredibly humbled when I heard that I had been nominated for Supervisor of the Year for the training region.

“It has certainly been a rough year in medicine, including for doctors in training, and it was gratifying to know that despite this I was still nominated, it’s a very cheerful end to 2020!” Dr Beasley said.

Mrs Georgina van de Water, CEO of local general practice education and training provider GP Synergy, said GP supervisors and general practice staff are an essential part of training our next generation of GPs.

“GP registrars make a significant contribution to primary health care provision in local communities, undertaking more than 386,000 consultations across the Nepean, Western and Northern Sydney region in the first half of this year alone,” Mrs van de Water said.

“GP supervisors play a crucial role in ensuring these GP registrars develop the skills and knowledge needed to understand and meet local population health care needs.

“Across the Nepean, Western and Northern Sydney region, there are more than 370 accredited GP supervisors, training nearly 420 GP registrars.

“Although there can only be one winner, the annual GP Supervisor of the Year award provides an opportunity to reflect and call attention to the significant contribution and dedication of all of our GP supervisors.

“GP Synergy is delighted to be able to present this year’s Supervisor of the Year award for Nepean, Western and Northern Sydney to Dr Beasley in recognition of her commitment to excellence in general practice education and training,” she said.
