A Nowra GP has been recognised for his outstanding contribution to training the next generation of GPs.

Dr Jarrod Alkemade of Moss Street Medical Practice was named GP Synergy Supervisor of the Year for the South Eastern NSW training subregion, at a ceremony in Wollongong.

Dr Alkemade moved to Nowra in 2008 to study at the University of Wollongong’s Shoalhaven campus. Completing his internship and residency years in the region he also undertook his training to become a specialist GP at Moss Street Medical Practice and South Coast Medical Service Aboriginal Corporation.

“I was supervised by very experienced and welcoming GPs – Drs Vicki McCartney, Janet Kunze and Jenny Woods at Moss Street, and Dr Stuart Randell from the Aboriginal Medical Service – they provided me with a well-rounded experience and I wanted to be able to continue to provide that same welcoming environment for other doctors in GP training.

“As a GP supervisor I want to be able to show registrars the benefits of our specialty and ensure they enjoy their three to four years of training.

“I enjoy teaching and the interaction with registrars, it also allows me to create a collegial and social environment inside and outside the practice,” Dr Alkemade said.

Mr John Oldfield, CEO of local general practice education and training provider, GP Synergy, said the awards recognise excellence and ongoing commitment to quality general practice education and training.

“The training of GP registrars relies heavily on accredited GPs and general practices to ensure GP registrars receive the training they require to understand and meet the health care needs of local communities.

“There are more than 230 accredited training practices across the South Eastern NSW training subregion, training a similar number of GP registrars.

“The importance of the role of the supervisor in developing our next generation of highly skilled GPs cannot be understated,” Mr Oldfield said.
