Dr Rohana Wanasinghe of Bridge Medical Centre has been recognised for his outstanding contribution to training the next generation of GPs, by being named GP Synergy Supervisor of the Year for the New England/Northwest training region.
Wanting to provide trainee GPs with an opportunity to experience health care in a rural setting, Dr Wanasinghe and Bridge Medical Centre became accredited for GP training in 2018.
“As a GP supervisor I most enjoy being able to guide GP registrars through rural healthcare.
“I find it is an amazing learning experience for those that may have not had the opportunity to experience rural general practice before.
“As medicine is continuously changing, having them come here also helps me update my own skills and learn new things.
“I strive for greatness within my role of GP supervisor and to be recognised for the effort I have put into this role is very honouring!”
Mrs Georgina van de Water, CEO of local general practice education and training provider GP Synergy, said GP supervisors and general practice staff are an essential part of training our next generation of GPs.
“GP supervisors play a crucial role in ensuring these GP registrars develop the skills and knowledge needed to understand and meet local population health care needs.
“Across the New England/Northwest region, there are 65 accredited GP supervisors.
“Although there can only be one winner, the annual Supervisor of the Year award provides an opportunity to reflect and call attention to the significant contribution and dedication of all of our GP supervisors.
“In what has been a particularly challenging year for general practice, our GP supervisors have risen to the challenge whilst also ensuring the training needs of registrars have been met.
“GP Synergy is delighted to be able to present this year’s Supervisor of the Year award for New England/Northwest to Dr Wanasinghe in recognition of his commitment to excellence in general practice education and training,” she said.
