To become a GP takes many years of hard work and dedication, and Dr Susan Roberts is excelling as she works towards that goal.

Dr Roberts who is training to become a specialist GP at Main Street Medical Centre – Murwillumbah, has been named joint winner of GP Synergy’s North Coast Registrar of the Year, recognising her commitment to quality general practice education and training.

Originally from the UK, Dr Roberts took a ‘year out’ to work at the Tweed Hospital Emergency Department.

“That one year turned into many years,” Dr Roberts said.

“I really enjoyed the variety and team environment in the emergency department, but I opted to join the GP training program to still have that clinical variety but with more of a work-life balance.

“I have really enjoyed the GP training program and I’ve felt well supported by GP Synergy and the team at Main Street Medical Centre.

“Since starting GP training, I’ve developed specific clinical interests in paediatrics, woman’s health, sexual health and acute care and I have additional qualifications in medical law and medical education.

“Working as a GP has allowed me to pursue those interests and GP Synergy has been supportive of me undertaking some of my training part-time to allow me to work in other roles in medical education with both General Practice Registrars Australia and GP Synergy.

“I am delighted to have received this award in what has been a very challenging year for those working in healthcare.

“I’m looking forward to a long career in general practice and medical education.”

Mrs Georgina van de Water, CEO of local general practice education and training provider GP Synergy, said during their three-to-four-year journey to become a specialist GP, GP registrars make a significant contribution to primary healthcare provision in local communities.

“GP registrars have undertaken more than 213,000 consultations across the North Coast training region in the first half of this year alone,” Mrs van de Water said.

“GP Synergy is delighted to recognise Dr Roberts as the joint winner of the 2021 Registrar of the Year for North Coast, for commitment and excellence during her GP training.

“With more than 200 registrars currently training in accredited general practices across the North Coast region, Dr Roberts’ achievement is certainly something to be proud of.”
