GPs in training wellbeing committee - GP Synergy

GPs in training wellbeing committee

GP Synergy is looking for registrars to become members of GP Synergy’s GPs in training wellbeing committee. We have a strong representation from urban registrars on the committee, but we are keen for other registrar voices to join.

GP Synergy signed up to the Every Doctor Every Setting Framework on 27 October 2020 which solidifies GP Synergy’s commitment to doctor’s wellbeing.

In 2021, we would like to implement the framework for GPs in training. To do so, our first step is to bring together a committee of GP supervisors, registrars, RACGP PEP participants and GP Synergy staff to review the framework and identify key areas GP Synergy can influence improved wellbeing for GPs in training.

Two of the registrars who are members of the committee told us why they joined the committee:

Dr Benjamin Lim

“I believe this is a really fantastic initiative that helps promote the wellbeing and mental health of doctors which is such an important priority. As part of this group, I hope we can further increase awareness of these issues, reinforce what resources are available to effectively maintain wellbeing and encourage how we can best support one another as colleagues.

As a registrar I have recent, first-hand exposure of the complex workplace dynamics and training requirement demands which can lead to detrimental outcomes such as stress and burnout. By bringing our personal experiences and ideas to the table and contributing to this framework, we hopefully can have a profoundly beneficial impact on the wellbeing of current doctors as well as future generations of medical professionals to come! “

Dr Isabel Hanson

“Healthy doctors create a healthy community. Especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, doctors’ need to advocate for and support one another.

GP Registrars are the future of general practice. Transitioning from hospital medicine to being a GP registrar to becoming an independent GP fellow is a fulfilling and challenging journey. We need to support GP registrars to get the most out of their training and to remain well and healthy throughout.”

The committee will meet monthly for 1.5 hours and some work will be required between meetings. The meetings, preparation and review time will be paid. The meetings are held on the third week of each month and alternate between Thursdays and Fridays.

As a registrar selected for the committee, your role will be to provide your input into the agenda items tabled at the meeting as well as provide valuable feedback and insights about how GP Synergy can action this framework.

If you are interested in becoming a member of this committee, please email your expression of interest to Jan Shedden  by Monday 17 May.
