GP Synergy Awards 2021 – South Eastern NSW

South Eastern NSW Supervisor of the Year – Dr Stephen Henry
Dr Stephen Henry is a GP supervisor at South Coast Medical Service Aboriginal Corporation, where he also undertook part of his own GP training. He has grown up, trained and continues to work in the Shoalhaven area where he uses his platform in the community to promote a healthy and active lifestyle and inspire children to learn and pursue their academic goals. He has a strong focus on ongoing professional development and evidence-based medicine. He frequently organises education sessions for staff and also performs practice audits to address and rectify identifiable weaknesses in order to improve healthcare outcomes. Despite his many commitments including running offsite outreach clinics and school health promotion days, he always makes time to individually mentor and educate registrars, well exceeding the requirements. Registrars feel well supported, with Stephen encouraging good work-life balance, and doing the utmost to advocate for and accommodate any personal or professional requests. In the words of a registrar: "Stephen has helped me gain a wider appreciation of healthcare inequalities and also the ways in which a mentor can help shape someone’s future. Stephen’s influence has changed my mindset from just wanting to be a healthcare provider, to now wanting to be an active and influential member of the local community, including hopefully becoming a GP supervisor myself in the near future".
