Resilience - GP Synergy

Resilience. A word that is bandied about a lot these days. But what does it mean, and how does it apply to doctors’ health and wellbeing?

In practice we can think of resilience as our individual capacity to adapt when the systems around us are part of the cause of stress. If viewed in this sense it can be a term of empowerment. It enables us to take control of the situation, especially if the environment around us won’t change. Rather than succumb to the stresses of training and clinical practice, resiliency encompasses the tools to be proactive through challenges and adversity, and ultimately prevent burnout.

There are many ways to build your resiliency toolkit. What works for you may be different to what works for others.

The American Medical Association has developed an online module Steps Forward – which can help you on your journey.
