Dr Sylvia Lim has had an interesting journey to becoming a GP trainee in Cootamundra.

She’s worked as a physio in rural NSW, helped set up a rehabilitation centre in China after the 2008 earthquakes and worked for the Australian Public Service while completing a Masters in International Law. All before completing her medical training and junior doctor years in Wagga Wagga.

“I wanted to become a rural GP as I felt it was the best way for me to contribute to my community,” Dr Lim said.

“I really enjoy the continued care you can provide a patient.

“Getting to know your patient, their families and helping them navigate the range of challenges life can bring their way can be very rewarding.”

Dr Lim is completing her specialist GP training through the Australian General Practice Training program, delivered in NSW and ACT by GP Synergy. Since 2002, more than 10,000 doctors have become specialist GPs through the program nationally.

She has just begun her second term of training at Cootamundra Medical Centre.

“It is such a nice practice to work in where everyone looks out for each other,” Dr Lim said.

“The patients are very genuine and down to earth so I feel really invested in their well-being.

“The Murrumbidgee is where I now call home, so I can’t imagine ever wanting to leave.

“Once I’ve completed my training, I see myself working in general practice 3-4 days a week, pursuing further training in sports medicine to enhance my GP skills, and spending the rest of the time enjoying everything that I already love about the region”.
