Western NSW

Raised in Sydney, a year at the School of Rural Health set Dr Lunney on the path to becoming a rural GP with a resolve to stay in the central west of NSW for the long term.

“After completing medical school, I returned to Dubbo, working at Dubbo Base Hospital for two years prior to entering general practice training here.

“Dubbo is a great community to live and work in.

“I would ideally love to stay in Dubbo for the longer term. This community has been so welcoming to me, a pleasure to live and work in – it has become home,” Dr Lunney said.

Dr Lunney is looking forward to training in Gilgandra, an agricultural town 45 minutes north of Dubbo.

“Becoming familiar with a new patient cohort is always a bit of a learning curve.

“It will no doubt present a new set of challenges and experiences for me, an opportunity for me to further develop my procedural, acute and chronic care skills.

“Away from the major centres there are greater challenges in healthcare access and provision, specifically surrounding limited primary care and speciality services, the tyranny of distance and socioeconomic differences,” Dr Lunney said.

GP training was an obvious choice for Dr Lunney due to the diversity of health issues and patient problems seen.

“Training in Western NSW affords unparalleled opportunities for hands-on clinical experience and ultimately, a greater scope of practice.

“And it’s a pleasure to be able to give back to the community through my work,” Dr Lunney said.
