Western NSW

Dr Funmi Komolafe is a long-term GP supervisor in the the far western NSW city of Broken Hill, she is motivated to help aspiring doctors experience and enjoy a rewarding career in general practice.

Tell us a little bit about your background.

I have been a practicing doctor for 23 years, 19 years as a GP and 18 years in Broken Hill with interests in dermatology and mental health. I hold fellowships of both the Australian College of General Practitioners and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine. I hold a Master of Public Health degree and a diploma in dermatology. I am married with three children and I am a keen cook.

Why did you decide to become a GP?

I love the diversity and breadth that general practice provides. Being able to perform a range of duties from minor surgeries to counselling makes a GP’s day interesting and fulfilling. The opportunity to build lasting relationships with your patients and get a chance to help them through various stages of life is priceless.

What was your motivation in becoming a GP supervisor?

The desire to help other aspiring doctors experience and enjoy a rewarding career in general practice. The need to contribute to maintaining the integrity and quality of the discipline and to help train and support more GPs to address the workforce shortage.

What do you enjoy most about being a GP supervisor?

Seeing GP registrars evolve in their training and grow in confidence to become qualified fellows of the college. The pleasure of sharing their happiness when they pass their fellowship exams (and we have produced several of those). Teaching and training GP registrars keeps the supervisor sharp too!

How do you find working and living in Broken Hill?

Living and working in Broken Hill is enjoyable and satisfying. The people, the art scene, and the beautiful outback sunset. The ease of getting around; it takes less than 10 minutes to get anywhere. There is a strong community spirit and a culture of kindness.

What is the best thing about working at the Broken Hill GP Super Clinic?

The congenial multidisciplinary team and excellent work environment. The multiple ancillary services that are available for wholistic patient care and the striving for excellence in its delivery.
