Tell us a little bit about your background.
I have been a practicing doctor for 23 years, 19 years as a GP and 18 years in Broken Hill with interests in dermatology and mental health. I hold fellowships of both the Australian College of General Practitioners and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine. I hold a Master of Public Health degree and a diploma in dermatology. I am married with three children and I am a keen cook.
Why did you decide to become a GP?
I love the diversity and breadth that general practice provides. Being able to perform a range of duties from minor surgeries to counselling makes a GP’s day interesting and fulfilling. The opportunity to build lasting relationships with your patients and get a chance to help them through various stages of life is priceless.
What was your motivation in becoming a GP supervisor?
The desire to help other aspiring doctors experience and enjoy a rewarding career in general practice. The need to contribute to maintaining the integrity and quality of the discipline and to help train and support more GPs to address the workforce shortage.
What do you enjoy most about being a GP supervisor?
Seeing GP registrars evolve in their training and grow in confidence to become qualified fellows of the college. The pleasure of sharing their happiness when they pass their fellowship exams (and we have produced several of those). Teaching and training GP registrars keeps the supervisor sharp too!
