Background? There were a couple of reasons that attracted me to undertaking an academic term.
I think it offers a balance to clinical work, you’re using your brain in a different way, you’re working in a different part of medicine, but it’s all related.
Through teaching you facilitate medical students learning, it’s a compliment to what you do as clinician. I’ve done some teaching before so I knew that I enjoyed it.
To find a research problem, identify it, carry out the research and to be able to feed results back to students is really nice.
Research? I’m looking at Advanced Care Planning in general practice. – how GPs can initiate Advanced Care Planning discussions. I’m looking at a structured tool and whether it could be adapted for use by GPs. It’s a general tool about bringing up the topic of Advanced Care Planning.
I want to look at use of the tool for older patients who are well, I’m not trialling it as yet with patients but looking at how to adapt it for GPs with older well patients.
Why? Advanced Care Planning is expected to be part of routine care in well older patients but studies show that those discussions are not happening. Difficulties arise from the uncertainty about how to start the discussion.
Benefits? The academic term is enriching my training, I’m quite lucky to have this exposure to working as an academic – it can be hard to get into research, so this is a really nice introduction to research and teaching.
Future? I hope to use my research skills in a few different ways; potentially I’d like to do further research formally through a PhD or informally as part of a research project. I would like to be involved in medical teaching possibly as an Associate Lecturer at the university.
Recommendation? The academic term is enriching my training, I’m quite lucky to have this exposure to working as an academic – it can be hard to get into research, so this is a really nice introduction to research and teaching.
I would recommend planning early if you think you want to do an academic post, be clear about what you want to look at and approach universities and supervisors early to get going. The application process is involved so you need to do a fair amount work.
