Our mission is to train highly skilled medical practitioners contributing to healthier communities. We are committed to building a high quality general practice workforce in our rural, regional and urban NSW and ACT training regions.
GP Synergy is the sole provider of the federally funded Australian General Practice Training (AGPT) program for doctors seeking to specialise as General Practitioners (GPs) in NSW and ACT. We offer a diverse range of high quality education and training opportunities across rural, remote, outer-metropolitan and metropolitan settings.
Doctors training with us can pursue either Fellowship of the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM) or Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP).
We deliver a regionalised education training program across the three NSW/ACT training regions – Western NSW, Lower Eastern NSW and North Eastern NSW. In recognition of the diverse communities and population health needs within these training regions, registrars train in specific subregions with education delivered by local medical education teams led by regional heads of education.
Registrars training with us benefit from a comprehensive education program consisting of synchronous program elements that are compulsory and common to all regions, and which address the ACRRM and RACGP curricula as well as all the identified national health priority areas. To address specific regional community health needs and registrar learning needs, the program also includes asynchronous program sessions that are regionally specific, determined by the regional medical education team.
We have ten local offices providing on the ground, regional medical education and administration support and local education delivery.
GP Synergy was formed in 2009 with the merger of two Regional Training Providers (RTPs) – the Sydney Institute of General Practice Education & Training (SIGPET) and the rural New England Area Training Services (NEATS) – a region covering 99,000kms (1.3 times the size of Tasmania).
In 2010, GP Synergy merged for the second time with the Institute of General Practice Education (IGPE) in south/southwestern Sydney, becoming the largest provider of vocational training in NSW.
In the 2014-2015 Federal budget it was announced there would be an administrative restructure of the Regional Training Provider (RTP) network. This would include:
- changes to current training regions (number and boundaries)
- a competitive tender process to determine which organisation/s would deliver training in these new regions from 1 January 2016 onwards.
In October 2015 GP Synergy was announced as the successful tenderer to deliver GP training in each of the three new training regions in NSW & ACT – North Eastern NSW, Lower Eastern NSW and Western NSW.
We recognise the important contributions that outgoing RTPs have made to Australian General Practice Training over many years, and the significant knowledge they have about their regions. Over the coming months we will be working closely with outgoing providers to seamlessly transition registrars, supervisors and training facilities into GP Synergy.
Our commitment to maintaining high quality training standards, regionally responsive training, and improving primary healthcare workforce in rural and remote locations and areas of workforce need will not change.
In addition, we will continue to value relationships with Aboriginal health partners and work closely with them to develop and deliver meaningful initiatives that improve primary healthcare outcomes for local Aboriginal communities.
The critical role GP supervisors and training facilities play in GP training is well recognised, and as a matter of priority we will ensure supervisors continue to receive the support they need to train our next generation of GPs.
Flexibility and regionalised input is crucial in future training arrangements, and we will be actively seeking to further partnerships with new and existing stakeholders to identify local population health and workforce issues, and how we can work together to address them.
Our dedicated and passionate staff are guided by our organisational values: Respect, excellence and initiative.
