A healthy outlook for rural communities as GP registrars celebrate the end of training

Last night, 18 GP registrars were congratulated for reaching the end of their general practice training at a dinner held by local general practice training provider, GP Synergy, in Tamworth.

This included Tamworth based doctors Elizabeth Leprince, David Lockart and Danmin Zhu, who all have plans to continue practising in town.

“I have really enjoyed my training experience,” said Dr Elizabeth Leprince who undertook her GP training in local general practices in Tamworth and Warialda, and Tamworth Hospital.

“I am looking forward to settling down in Tamworth and hope to be able to work in Tamworth and the surrounding communities in the future,” she said.

“I really encourage any doctor considering rural general practice to give it a go. In our region I have encountered many wonderful practices and GP supervisors.”

Amongst the guests celebrating the doctors’ achievements were representatives from Tamworth Hospital, New England Medicare Local, local councils well as many local GP supervisors who play an integral role in the training of GP registrars.

GP Synergy Chief Executive Officer, Mr John Oldfield, says the outlook for general practice services is looking positive as the numbers of GP registrars training in the region continue to grow and an increasing number are deciding to stay on in the region after completing their training.

“The number of GP registrars training in the New England/Northwest region has sky rocketed from an intake of 10 in 2009 to 31 in 2014,” said Mr Oldfield.

“Based on the most recent retention data, 51% of GP registrars have continued to work as general practitioners in the local community.

“It is a long journey to become a GP, taking many years of medical training. We sincerely congratulate these registrars on this significant achievement,” he said.
